‘Taglish’
This photo-book is a sort of precursor to my film ‘Kapuluan’. They both deal with the same ideas and themes: my Filipino identity, culture, its language and the effects on my family relationships.Through the use of self portraits, photographic archives and sculptural retrospective narration, this photo-book project is driven greatly by my need to understand why my father neglected to integrate our family more into his culture - with refusal to teach us his native language of Tagalog. At this point, I was trying to work through all my distain, resentment and, ultimately, confusion surrounding all that I could’ve had… and what I could have been.
